Undoubtably the highlight of Évora was the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones), where you just have to see it for yourself to truly appreciate the site.
It is a small interior chapel located next to the entrance of the Igreja de São Francisco (Church of St. Francis).

The Portuguese inscription reads “We, the bones that are here await yours.”

As the story goes during the 16th Century, the graveyards in Évora were overcrowded, so bones were exhumed to make way for new bodies to be buried.
Over 5000 bones were respectfully cast into the cement and housed in this place of worship.
Apparantly the exhumation aligned with the common beliefs of the era and followed the Counter-Reformation ideology that the bodies would be closer to God.
